Almost every van build makes you pick one: seat the whole family or sleep the whole family. Handle a rough forest road or feel like a home inside. Look beautiful or still have a warranty. Pick one.
This one stopped making you choose. Four ride up front, four sleep at night. The second-row captain's chairs come out with two bolts. It will take a washboard pass, an aired-down sand road, even a shallow water crossing — then plug into Starlink so you can work from the canyon rim. Still under Mercedes factory coverage through 2029.
Here is everything it is — and everything already done for you.

The life it unlocks

Friday
The kids climb into the captain's chairs, dog hops in back. You're rolling by dinner — fridge cold, full 47-gallon long-range tank topped off.
Saturday
Air down for a washboard forest road. The 4×4 with low range shrugs it off. Park where the view is, fire up the Webasto diesel heater if it's cold.
Sunday
Coffee from the galley. Starlink up. A morning of email from a folding chair, then home by dark — back in cell range, kids asleep before the driveway.
Why this isn't a gamble

The Vansmith of Boulder is one of the most respected custom outfitters in the country. This isn't a garage-built one-off — it's a documented, professionally engineered conversion with invoices to match.
Starlink mounted to the roof rack, deployable in seconds. Full-bar internet at the canyon rim, in the desert, in the mountains. Sold with the van — not stripped at handoff.
The build
Six things to know about how this van actually drives, sleeps, and gets you home.
01
Spec'd with the full Mercedes driver-assist suite — Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC (adaptive cruise), Active Lane Keeping, Blind Spot Assist, Crosswind Assist, Attention Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, High Beam Assist, Hill Start Assist, Active Brake Assist, and a full airbag complement. After ten hours behind the wheel with the kids in back, the difference is enormous: the van helps you drive instead of just letting you drive.
02
The factory 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel, 7-speed automatic, and full-time 4×4 with high and low range — quiet on the highway, decisive on a forest road. Van Compass off-road suspension, full skid plate package, and a refinished custom steel front bumper take it past where stock Sprinters give up. 2022 was the last model year of the true low-range 4×4 Sprinter — Mercedes switched to full-time AWD with no low range after this.
03
Method Race Wheels MR703 (17×7.5 matte black) on BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 LT275/70R17 Load Range E — built to run aired-down on washboard and re-aired at pavement. 50,000-mile tread warranty, TPMS included, speedo reads accurately. Full-size matching spare carried on the OWL Vans rear-door carrier.
04
The factory 24.5-gallon tank was removed and replaced with a 47-gallon long-range tank — nearly double the capacity, with a proportional jump in range. Larger fill neck for fast-filling at truck-stop diesel pumps. Fewer stops with kids in the van, real flexibility on long western drives.
05
Largest MBUX 10.25-inch touchscreen, 360 surround camera + backup cam, wireless phone charging. Heated power-folding mirrors + electrically heated windshield. Heated front seats both sides on swivel bases. LED High Performance headlamps + fog lamps with cornering function. Acoustic Package (factory sound insulation). Power-cinching sliding door, satellite radio, high roof, 67designs phone/tablet mounting. RennTech ECU tune + pedal controller for sharper throttle response.
06
Cedar ceiling, walnut butcher-block counters, Seabreeze fabric walls. 5 kWh Victron off-grid power system, 3,000W MultiPlus inverter, 180W rooftop solar, 30A shore. Isotherm Cruise 85 fridge, microwave, sink with on-demand hot water, 20 gal fresh / 22 gal gray, Webasto diesel heater, MaxxAir vent. Joolca HotTap V2 tankless hot-water shower mounted to the rear door.

Factory Mercedes configuration

The full build, every part by name
Here is exactly what is on it, brand by brand — verify any of it.
The price
This van began as one of The Vansmith's first seat-four / sleep-four builds on the Sprinter 144 (Bivy) platform — the configuration their Family series grew from.
The closest van Vansmith builds today is their Family — like this one, a 144 short-wheelbase that seats and sleeps four. Most family builds use the longer, less agile 170; this keeps full family capacity in the more capable 4×4 footprint. Their Family starts around $49,000 for the conversion alone — no van, and none of the off-road, recovery, or lighting systems this one carries.
This van is built well beyond a base family build:
All-in — the van, a full premium Vansmith conversion, and every upgrade above — it cost about $235,000 to build (receipts on file).
A complete, comparably-finished Vansmith build today runs well into six figures with a 12 to 18 month wait. Yours at $159,900 — about $75,000 / 32% below cost — ready now.

A note from the owner

This one is hard to let go. My kids love it — summers exploring out of it, skiing out of it all winter. But two growing kids and two adults will outgrow these bunks before long, and our family priorities are shifting.
I would rather sell it now, while it is still under Mercedes warranty and in genuinely great shape, and pass it to a family ready to make the same kind of memories we did.
You are welcome to take it to any Mercedes dealer for a pre-purchase inspection before you commit. That is how confident I am in it.
